Rollover Crashes: Uncommon But the Most Deadly
What is A Rollover Crash?
A rollover crash happens when a vehicle lands on its side or roof after colliding with an object or another vehicle. Sadly, rollover crashes are one of the most dangerous and have a higher fatality rate than any other motor vehicle accident. Here’s what you need to know.
Are Some Vehicles More Prone to Rollover Crashes?
The answer to the above question is yes. There are certain types of vehicles that can put you at a higher risk of being involved in a rollover crash. A January 2010 report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cited that out of 456,290 vehicles involved in rollover crashes, 272,018 of them were the following types of vehicles:
- Sport utility vehicles (SUVs)
- Vans
- Pickup trucks
- Heavy vehicles (Large trucks and buses)
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk of a rollover crash increases dramatically in 15 passenger vans. The NHTSA reported that 57% of the 235 15-passenger van occupants killed in rollover crashes were ejected from the vehicle between 2010 and 2019.
Smaller passenger vehicles accounted for 184,272, far less than their larger counterparts mentioned above. The reason why larger vehicles are at higher risk of a rollover crash is that a higher center of gravity and having more weight can throw off the balance of a vehicle when having to make sudden maneuvers.
How To Prevent a Rollover Crash
The good news is that rollover crashes are not very common. The bad news is that being involved in a rollover crash often means victims can sustain severe injuries such as a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. Here are some tips on how to prevent a rollover crash and minimize the severity of an injury:
- Keep your vehicle well-maintained.
- Check tires regularly to ensure they are in good condition.
- Always wear your seat restraint.
- Obey speed limits.
- Don’t overload your vehicle with cargo.
