Rise In Hospital Visits Due To Energy Drink Consumption
Over the past few years, emergency room visits due to consumption of energy drinks has been on the rise. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said hospitalizations in the United States tied to energy drinks have jumped tenfold to 13,114 in 2009 from 1,128 visits in 2005.
Most of these visits have been a result of combining energy drinks with drugs and alcohol which can have an exhausting affect on the heart. The regular use of these energy drinks can lead to arrhythmia, hypertension and dehydration.
The vast majority of the visits were made by males between the ages of 18 and 39.
