GM Pays Record Fine — $35 Million Over Ignition Switch Recalls

The federal government settled with General Motors for $35 million after the company failed to act for 10 years over an ignition switch defect that led to numerous deaths and a recall of approximately 2.6 million vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said that this fine is the highest amount ever paid as a result of investigative violations reported by the NHTSA. As the announcement came, the U.S.D.O.T said they would be closely monitoring GM’s efforts and response to the large number of recalled vehicles coming through.

Along with the fine, GM has agreed to give the NHTSA full access to continuously investigate all areas of production and provide full reports to the public.
