GM: Ignition Switch Repairs Underway

Repairs to fix millions of General Motor’s vehicles are underway today as GM has shipped thousands of ignition switches, ignition cylinders and key sets for older model small cars subject to the recall of 2.6 million vehicles that have been linked to at least 13 deaths.

Approximately 1.4 million owners of 2003-2007 model vehicles were mailed a letter last week stating that they should make an appointment with their local GM dealership with the repair time taking about 90 minutes.

Until these repairs are made, GM says it is “very important” that owners remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. They also advise that those with a manual transmission should make sure their ignition is off and set to reverse gear with the parking break on before removing the key. Owners of vehicles with an automatic transmission should be sure the vehicle is in park before removing the key.

Those with 2008-2011 model vehicles that meet the recall criteria will receive a letter confirming their inclusion in May, and another letter at a later date when parts are available.
