Are Concussions the Same as a Traumatic Brain Injury?

The Simple Answer

In the simplest answer, yes, a concussion is the same as a traumatic brain injury. However, concussions are only one form of traumatic brain injury and are most often considered to be the mildest as they don’t have the same symptoms as something that would be considered more severe.

Concussions are often caused by a jolting of the brain, or sudden movement, such as when a football player is hit with the crown of the helmet and it forces a fast jerk of the head in one direction. Similarly, some situations of whiplash can damage the brain to the point of causing a concussion.

One thing to note, however, is that traumatic brain injuries vary in severity and a concussion is typically just the mildest form. Other traumatic brain injuries can occur that often result in loss of consciousness for an extended period of time.

Concussions, no matter how minor, should be taken seriously and considered a problem that requires some medical attention and monitoring. Multiple concussions can lead to even further issues that can cause behavioral changes and other cognitive issues.
